Below is the recap from the ILYA Class X Championships from Brainerd, Minnesota:

DSCN0949Final Day - Beulah sailors rose to the occasion by winning both the senior and junior fleet ILYA Class X Championships.  B-111 with Kate Klement and Teresa Westin won the Senior Fleet title by one point over Eddy Cox of White Bear.  Cox won both of the final two races, but was followed in second by B-111, giving the ladies the Senior Fleet title by just one point!  David and Erin/Scott Sullivan also received hardware by placing 12th.  Emily Davenport and Olivia Healy closed strongly with a third place in the final race to close the event out in 18th place while cousin Sammy Davenport and Caroline Skotarzak finished 22nd.  Jack Clayton and Ryan Komas placed 57th.  See Senior Fleet Final Results @ Standings

Elsewhere, the Junior fleet race was heating up following two tough finishes by the Day 2 leader from Geneva.  B-66 sailed by Michael Barr and Gregory Westin pulled out the victory by just three points with a 5th and a 12th place finish on the final day.  The 12th became Michael's throw out race. Charlie Kutschenreuter and Alex Keck won the final race of the regatta, placing them 3rd overall.  They were followed in 4th place by Cullen and John Barr.  George Kiernan and Patrick Schmidt finished 8th overall followed closely by Mary Claire Kiernan and Sarah Kubicek who finished in 8th.  Riley Schmidt and Morgan Keck placed fifth in the final race, moving up to 16th overall.  They were closely followed by Andrea Sullivan and Brooke Komas in 17th.  Charlie Davenport and Eric Komas finished 22nd overall. Day #2: LBSS sailors made a charge today.  In the Senior Fleet, Kate Klement and Teresa Westin are now in second following three race wins while Sammy and David also made charges today.  Juniors continue to sail strongly with many in the top five.  Michael Barr and Gregory Westin are in second place overall with many other Beulah sailors in the top ten.    Mary Claire Kiernan and Sarah Kubicek won the the LaBelle Trophy punch bowl by taking Race #5.  They have moved up to tenth overall!

Up to three races remain to be sailed on Saturday.  Throw outs will be applied to the standings following the completion of race #6.

Day #2: Today at Gull Lake the breeze could not have been better for the Beulah fleet. The breeze was 15-20 from the Northwest. Four races were completed on both courses.

The Junior fleeters got off to a great start. Michael Barr led the charge sailing a consistent day with all races in the top five. George Kiernan also had a great day with a bullet in race three. Mary Claire Kiernan also got a bullet in race five. In race five MC won followed closely by Michael Barr. The start to race five was also very successful for Beulah. Charlie Davenport port tacked the fleet and crushed up the first beat. Beulah now has four boats in the top ten going into the final day.

On the senior fleet Beulah dominated as well.  The B 111 set the tone for the day by taking a bullet in the first race.  The B 19 and B 303 sailed well in the breeze finishing just outside the top ten.  The next race was won by W 66 but the B 19 sailed a more impressive race.  David and Scotty Sullivan battled back in the second race to finish 5th.  The B111 finished eleventh and both the B 333 and B303 finished in the top twenty.

After a much needed rest during lunch and a team meeting, the Beulah seniors were dialed in.  Race three truly reflected Lake Beulah's return on their recent training investments.  Kate Klement sailed brilliantly and won the race by a good amount.  David Sullivan finished sixth followed closely by Emily Davenport and Sammy Davenport.  Four Beulah sailors in the top ten of a Senior Fleet race!   The last race of the day was another good one for Beulah.  Kate Klement led the final lap for her third race win of the day and the B 19 rallied for an eleventh!

Final races will be sailed on Saturday.  Depending on the wind and time, up to three races may be sailed today.  Good luck to all.

Day #2 - Mid day report: In the Senior Fleet,  Kate Klement and Teresa Westin lead the way by winning the first race of the day.  The duo has moved up to 5th place following a 10th in the second and final race of the day.  Sammy Davenport and Caroline Skotarzak find themselves sitting in 15th place followed by David, Erin and Scott Sullivan 16th.  Note that the B-19 finished fifth in the final race of the day.  The B-333 and B-10 also saw stronger results today.

In the Juniors, Beulah sailors continue to land in the top ten.  George Kiernan and Patrick Schmidt won race #3 and find themselves in 2nd place overall.  Michael Barr and Gregory Westin sit one place behind in 3rd place.  They have three top five finishes.  Cullen and John Barr sit two places behind their brother in 5th while Charley Kutschenreuter and Alex Keck are 6th.  Moving up to 14th place, Mary Claire Kiernan and Sarah Kubicek had a strong day today.  Riley Schmidt and Morgan Keck are also sailing strongly in their first ILYA Championship.  They are 16th, followed in 19th by Andrea Sullivan and Brooke Komas.  Charlie Davenport and Eric Komas are 23rd.

Day #1: Today, LBSS students in the Junior Fleet made their presence known.  Beulah sailors finished 2, 3, 4, 6, 13, and 17 in the only completed race of the day.  In the Senior Fleet, the sailors found the going a little tougher.  B-111 and B-303 finished in 15th and 18th, respectively.  For results of both the Junior and Senior Fleets, click here . This was an unusual day as many of the pre-race favorites finished back in the pack including the 2008 defending champion.

After four hours of swimming and volleyball at the Gull Lake Yacht Club the breeze finally filled in @ around two knots from the southwest.  Not enough for racing, the Beulah sailors focused on voleyball where they advanced to the semi-finals.  They will play Okauchee tomorrow for a spot in the finals. After the four hour postponement the boats took to the lake to sail one race.

The Beulah junior fleet sailed very impressively taking four of the top ten positions. Charlie Kutsch led the charge taking second, followed by "Cul-Dawg" Barr in third, George Kiernan in fourth, and
Michael Barr in sixth.  The juniors sailed very well in difficult light wind conditions and are hungry to move up in the standings.

The Beulah senior fleet sailed a decent race as well. Sammie Davenport led the charge springing into the top ten early in the race. David Sullivan and Kate Klement suffered from weak starts and fought back into the top twenty by the first mark. The Beulah senior learned much about sailing in a large competitive fleet today and will continue to improve and learn throughout the regatta.

Practice Day #2: Today up in Minnesota winds were very light and variable. The Beulah fleet did not sail in the morning due to no wind. In the afternoon when the wind came it also brought storms. The practice race was abandoned due to storms which never materialized. Beulah spirits remain high despite the poor conditions.  Tomorrow is the first day of scheduled races.

Practice Day #1: Beulah had fifteen boats sailing on the water today with eight junior fleeters and five senior fleeters.

Everyone (including the parents) has survived the seven hour trek to northern Minnesota.  The weather today during our practice was slightly overcast in the morning, but it cleared up around noon. Winds were similar to those on Cedar Lake at the WYA Championship, about five knots from the southwest before dying to zero knots at around 3 pm.  By practicing on the lake. the fleet is gaining confidence.  Gull Lake is much larger than Lake Beulah, but all of the LBSS sailors appear to be gearing up for the big event.  After the first day of practice, the Beulah fleet appears to be ready for the Class X Inland Lakes Championships.  There is one more day of practice culminating in a practice race which will be run by the ILYA Race Committee.

After coming in from practice, the Beulah team practiced their volleyball skills for the infamous ILYA Volleyball Championship.  As noted, tomorrow is the final practice day.  The regatta begins on Thursday!

The Senior Fleet skippers are Jack Clayton, Emily Davenport, Mary Claire Kiernan, Kate Klement, and David Sullivan. The Junior Fleet skippers are Cullen Barr, Michael Barr, Charlie Davenport, Sammie Davenport, George Kiernan, Charlie Kutschenreuter, Riley Schmidt, and Andrea Sullivan.
