Lake Beulah's Kate Klement and Teresa Westin won the 2009 WYA Class X Championship. Competing on Cedar Lake with sixty six (66) other X boats, the B-111 crew leveraged strong starts in the three challenging races to take the title. Beulah placed five others in the top ten: B-16, B21, B-6, B-1, and B-66! Chip Mann of Cedar Lake was the PRO for the regatta.

This is the twelfth time since 1945 that Beulah sailors have won the WYA Class X Championship.

The weekend of July 18-19, s ixteen (16) Beulah boats made the hour trek up to Cedar Lake for the WYA X Championships. Winds were light and shifty, typical of Cedar.  While two days of racing were planned, the race committee ran three races on Saturday during which Beulah had an outstanding showing.

Race One was sailed in a light breeze from the Northwest. An extremely pin favored starting line was not a challenge for the Beulah crews. Immediately after the starting horn, five (5) Beulah boats shot off the line into the top ten. Given the challenging short beat, the Klement/Westin cleared the line, found an early lane, sailed for the puffs, and maintained good boat speed. They won the first race with ease putting the fleet on notice that they meant business.

In race two, Beulah boats were even more dominant. While B-111 raced off to their second win of the day, every Beulah boat showed moments of brilliance. On B-20, Erik Zettlemoyer and Max Kunz made it look "E.Z." pulling off an eighth place finish in race two, their best finish of the year. In the final race of the day, B-16's Charlie Kutsch and Alex Keck sailed a great race finishing second after battling for first place for an entire W4+.

Due to lack of wind on Sunday, Saturday's evening standings became final!  Kate and Teresa had won their second regatta of the year (Quad Lakes).  Nicholas Clemence of Pewaukee finished in second place, just three points behind B-111.

As a group. the Beulah X sailors have performed very well in regattas with light and variable winds.  This event was no exception. Charlie Kutschenreuter and Alex Keck finished in 4th place, followed by George Kiernan / Patrick Schmidt, Cullen Barr / John Barr, Mary Claire Kiernan / Sarah Kubicek, and Michael Barr / Gregory Westin in 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th, respectively.  These five crews will all be competing in the ILYA Junior Fleet at Gull Lake. Hopefully, the Beulah X Fleet will continue to maintain their prowess at the Inland Lakes Championship next week at Gull Lake in Brainerd, Minnesota
