The Lake Beulah Sailing School, Inc. (LBSS) is a not-for-profit organization providing sailing instruction. Our many programs are presented at the Lake Beulah Yacht Club, located at N9220 East Shore Drive in East Troy. Programs are designed to provide students with an appreciation of the pleasures of sailing and tennis as both leisure-time and competitive activities; to develop a high degree of competence in the handling and maintenance of equipment; and to teach the importance of sportsmanship, team play, and respect for property. Lessons are offered at various levels from novice to experienced for children and young adults ages 6 to 70.

Students who sign up for more than one class will pay only for the more expensive class.

Optimist

Optimist

Optimist Dinghy Courses

Our Optimist Dinghy courses offer beginning sailing training through advanced racing skills. The LBSS program is designed to enable sailors to learn how to sail at an age appropriate level. Green Fleet Optimist students must have completed 1st grade. Students in Learn to Sail and Green Fleet classes do not need to own boats. Students in Red/White/Blue Optimist classes, who do not own an Optimist, may charter LBSS boats (to be stored at LBYC). Red/White/Blue Opti students who do not own an Optimist may rent a boat to be stored at their home for $200/hull, spars, and blades, and $150/damage deposit. Contact Jim Kutschenreuter (262) 642-2515 to make arrangements. Please note that a signed rental agreement must be on file with LBSS. These forms will be available at the Orientation Meeting.

Life vests and whistles are also required for all participants. It is the participant's responsibility to provide his/her own life vest with whistle.

Kinderpram (Aged 4-6 years)

Course Fee: $150

LBSS will be re-instituting a KinderPram program in 2016. This will be very basic and mostly consist of having fun and simply messing around in boats. It will be aimed at 4-5-6 year olds that want to get started but aren’t quite ready for the longer and more formal Learn To Sail and Green classes.

Green Fleet  Optimist

Course Fee: $450

This class will teach basic sailing skills and introductory racing including knots, rigging and basic seamanship. Students learn how to complete a sailing course around marks including starts. Participants in this class may, with instructor permission, compete in LBYC coached races. It is anticipated that most members of this class will receive instructor permission to race during the month of July. Students should have completed 1st grade and/or have previously completed Learn to Sail or Kinderpram, to enroll in this class. Green Fleet Optimist students may sail Optis owned by the LBSS and will not be assessed a rental fee or they may bring their own optimist. Classes will be held indoors in the event of inclement weather. For those interested in sailing on Friday nights, a Green Fleet series is hosted by the LBYC at 5:45 pm. In the event that LBSS optimists have been in use for a Friday afternoon class, boats may be left rigged for use in the Friday evening races. Please confirm your needs with instructors in advance. Parents should be on-site at the LBYC for the Friday night races to assist their child in rigging, launching, landing, and de-rigging the boat.

Red/White/Blue Optimist

Course Fee: $550

This course is recommended for sailors who have both completed 2nd grade and completed “Green Fleet” Optimist. Students in this class will learn beginning racing techniques and seamanship skills. Students will be instructed how to rig his/her boat and become a self-reliant sailor. Students also will learn rules, tactics and proper sailing techniques.

Classes meet at the LBYC for 3 hour sessions. Please consult your schedule for times and dates. For details, see below Red, White, and Blue Fleet coaching will be available at specified regattas for Red/White/Blue Optimist students. Please refer to the calendar for class times and dates. See http://www.usoda.org for additional information regarding Optimist fleets, regatta fleet colors, etc.

Other Events for Optimist Sailors

The Lake Beulah Yacht Club (LBYC) sponsors three racing series for the Optimist sailor. A coached Friday early evening series for Green Fleet, a Weekend Championship Series (Red, White & Blue Fleet), and an uncoached weekend Optimist Green Fleet offer parents and students a variety of opportunities to participate. LBSS also offers the LBSS Optimist Regatta for Opti sailors of all levels. Other regional regattas are available and are listed on the LBSS calendar. Entry forms for these and other events are available through LBSS.

Optimist Racing

Green Fleet students are encouraged to participate in the Friday night Green Fleet Series. LBSS instructors/advanced students will be available for consultation around these races. Please note that no Red/White/Blue Opti racers will be on the water during the Green Fleet Series so it is a low-key place for intermediates to start racing. Opti Rentals for use during these races are available for use on a first come, first served basis. Many will already be rigged from the Friday afternoon classes, and parents are required to put boats away at the end of the race. The LBSS Optimist Regatta, Kaszube Cup - Green, ILYA No Tears, and Pram Power are some of the local regattas which Green Fleet sailors may attend.

Red/White/Blue should not be racing on Friday nights, but instead are encouraged to race in the LBYC Weekend Championship Series races. As noted previously, Red/White/Blue sailors are also encouraged to compete in the following regattas: LBSS Opti, Junior Olympics, GLSS Opti, Kaszube, USODA Midwest Champs, ILYA Champs, and the USODA Nationals.

To participate in LBYC sponsored races, children must be a member of the Lake Beulah Yacht Club. A membership in LBYC is necessary to cover insurance and trophy costs. A youth (Junior) membership to LBYC in the amount of $50 is available for children under 17 who participate in youth sailing activities. Contact Kathy Will at 262-642-5571 for details.

X Cub Boat

X Cub Boat

X Boat "Cub" Courses

Course Fee: $ 650 Skipper, $ 350 Crew

Beginning to advanced skills are developed in our X Boat Programs. Skipper and crew training will be held concurrently in both classroom and on-the-water sessions. LBSS coaching will also be available at X regattas. For our on-lake classes, skippers should bring their X Boats to class for on-the-water training. Boats must be equipped with legal flotation. Additionally, life vests are required and are to be worn shore to shore. It is the responsibility of each participant to provide his/her own US Coast Guard Approved life vest.

Classroom and on the water training

Sportsmanship, rigging, boat safety, docking and steering, teamwork and racing tactics will be covered in classroom setting. Following classroom training, all X Boat sailors should appear on the water with boat and safety equipment. On the water instruction includes a combination of drills designed to reinforce classroom instruction. When weather conditions are inclement, classes may be held inside the yacht club, if appropriate. Classes may be canceled without prior notice.

Early in the season, elective private lessons may be scheduled for all skippers. Additionally, we have planned a one day
clinic just before WYA X and ILYA X Championships.

Other Events For X Boat Sailors

Lake Beulah Yacht Club sponsors a weekday X series. This series is comprised of two daily races to be sailed either on Wednesday or Thursday afternoons. Race time is 1:30. All X boat sailors are encouraged to participate in both races. Scoring for both races will determine placement in the Weekday Series Championships. The scores of the first race will also be scored independently to attain a "Special Series" winner. The top three finishers from the previous year’s LBYC X Championship Series will not be eligible to be scored for the Special Series. A weekend Championship series is also administered by LBYC. If your family is not a member of the LBYC, a youth membership ($50) is required to participate in these LBYC races. Contact Kathy Will at 642-5571 for details.

Regattas and clinics

Regattas supported by LBSS coaches include QUAD Lakes, GLSS, WYA, ILYA, and Blue Chip Championships.  Suggested clinics include Training Regatta at Pine (TRAP), X Clinic prior to WYA, and an X clinic prior to the ILYA Championships.
